"I enjoyed this and was glad that I booked this. The guide was very helpful in translating and my prior experience helped me learn it quickly. I even picked up a tip on how to make the whistle sound which I am going to apply to golf swing"

How the Session Runs
Four parts, from the bow to the demonstration, in the standard or the extended course.
Arrive at the Temple in Minoh
The session takes place in a quiet temple in Minoh, a city on the northern edge of Osaka. You get the meeting details after booking; getting there is up to you. An interpreter guide is with you throughout.
Bow to the Sword
Training begins with etiquette: how to bow to the sword and why respect is shown to it, and why people still train with swords long after they stopped being weapons of everyday combat.
Stance, Grip, Footwork, Breathing
The sword master adjusts the practice to you: beginners start with the fundamentals, guests with martial-arts experience get more detailed guidance. The extended course adds repeated practice and individual instruction.
Watch a Real Blade, Ask Anything
The master demonstrates a form with a real blade, showing how posture, breathing and precise movement come together. You ask questions through the interpreter; you do not use the real blade yourself.

Watch, Dress Up or Train: What a Samurai Experience in Osaka Really Is
Fifteen samurai and ninja experiences side by side, what each one has you do with a sword, who each suits, and the practical part: where they are, ages, clothes and languages.
The Osaka samurai experience this site recommends is DeepExperience’s private training with a sword master in a quiet temple in Minoh: three and a half to five hours learning to bow to the sword, stand, grip, step and breathe, with an interpreter and a real-blade demonstration, rated 4.9 from 57 reviews, from $305 a person as of October 2026. It is the one where you learn swordsmanship rather than dress up for it. For a broader, gentler half day of kimono, calligraphy, tea and armor photos, Bushi no Homare’s culture session is the alternative, from $202.
What “samurai experience” means in Osaka
The phrase covers four quite different things, and the product titles rarely say which one you are buying:
- Sword technique. Stance, grip, footwork and the draw, taught by a teacher of a sword school, usually with a training sword and a demonstration with a real one. DeepExperience’s private sessions are this kind, and so is Yushindou’s one-hour dojo session. Samurai sword experiences in Osaka compares them.
- A culture session. Kimono or hakama, the brush, the tea bowl, a first lesson with a sword and armor for photos. Broad and gentle; you try a little of everything. Bushi no Homare’s session is rated 4.8 from 127 reviews.
- Cutting with a real blade. Tameshigiri, “test cutting”: after the basics you cut a rolled straw mat with a sharp sword, under an instructor. Bushi no Homare sells it on its own from $90, and icp Travel’s iaido session includes it as one of its steps.
- Kendo. A sport, not a costume: bamboo swords, full protective armor and short matches against an instructor. Vicky’s two-hour class is rated 5.0 from 194 reviews. Kendo in Osaka explains what the hour inside the armor is like.
Ninja experiences are a separate, lighter thing: costumes, throwing stars and a blowgun, built for families. Ninja experiences in Osaka covers the two in town.
If you only want to watch, a stage show is the better buy; osakasamuraishow.com covers Osaka’s samurai shows and how they differ.

Who each one suits
Pick by how deep you want to go:
Private Sword Master Training
Private hours with a teacher in a Minoh temple, with an interpreter.
Check dates →Samurai Culture Session
Kimono, brush, tea, sword basics and an armor photo. Ages 12 and up.
See this session →Kendo Training Experience
Two hours in full kendo armor, matches with the instructor.
See this class →DeepExperience’s private sessions suit anyone who would rather learn to move with a sword than dress up. The sword master adjusts the training to you, beginners start with the fundamentals, an interpreter carries the questions, and you watch a form demonstrated with a real blade. The Minoh temple session comes as a standard or an extended course; the Kozu Shrine one is closer to the city centre and includes a goshuin shrine seal.
The samurai culture session suits first-timers and couples who want photos and a calm introduction rather than a workout. It is not for children under 12, and people with back, heart or mobility problems are advised against it.
Kendo suits the sporty: Vicky’s class puts you in full armor and lets you strike the instructor in matches, and children from 5 can take part. Park for us runs a smaller, similar workshop for up to two people.
Test cutting suits anyone who mainly wants to feel a real blade go through a target. Bushi no Homare’s trial slashing is the cheapest way to do it, and its “Become the Shogun” session adds armor to the cut.
Families with young children do better at a ninja experience or in kendo; most sword sessions start at 10 or 12. Samurai experiences for kids lists every age limit.
Practical: where they are, clothes and languages
Where. DeepExperience trains in Minoh, a city on the northern edge of Osaka, or at Kozu Shrine in central Osaka, and gives the meeting point after booking. Bushi no Homare’s sessions are based at its studio at 2-3-19 Shiginonishi in Joto ward, east of Osaka Castle; its castle tour in armor also meets there, then walks Osaka Castle in costume. The iaido session is near Izumisano Station in the south, with a free taxi from the station. None of these includes hotel transport.
Clothes. You change into a dogi and hakama, kendo armor or kimono at most sword and kendo sessions, so wear something you can change out of easily. Bushi no Homare asks you to arrive 30 minutes early and bring a T-shirt.
Languages. Every session runs in English. DeepExperience also offers French, and Bushi no Homare can arrange Italian, Spanish, French, Chinese, Thai or Indonesian interpreters if you ask before booking.
Taking a sword home. The swords stay at the dojo. Buying a real Japanese sword to take home is a separate matter: it needs an export permit from Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs, which takes weeks, so it is a purchase to arrange with a dealer, not on the day.
Osaka Samurai Experience is an independent guide for visitors. It has no tie to DeepExperience, Bushi no Homare, Vicky, Yushindou or the other operators named here, or to GetYourGuide, which sells the bookings.

What Guests Say
"This was an unforgettable swordsmanship experience. I also chose the extended session. Before arriving at the temple, my guide Juraj asked what I hoped to gain while sharing history along the way. When I met Master Tatsuya Watanabe, he also asked about my interests before we began. The experience was tailored perfectly to my preferences. It was a privilege to learn from someone preserving authentic samurai traditions. He gave great demonstrations explaining techniques and showed me genuine antique katanas hundreds of years old. At the end I received a goshuin as a keepsake. I showed him my goshuin book, and seeing his reaction to my travels was memorable. Since the master only speaks Japanese, Juraj translated throughout and did a great job. He was clear and helpful, ensuring I understood everything. This is far more than a basic activity. It offers a respectful look into living samurai heritage. Highly recommended for anyone interested in Japanese sword culture and history."
"An exceptional experience and one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. This introduction to kenjutsu is much more than a class: it is a true immersion in Japanese culture and philosophy. Watanabe Sensei is a passionate, caring, and authentic teacher who imparts much more than just a technique. We particularly enjoyed the ceremony at the temple before the introduction, which brings a unique cultural and spiritual dimension to the experience. The location in Minoh is ideal, with the beautiful waterfall and forest walk just a 30-minute walk away. A big thank you also to Benoît, our interpreter, whose quality translations and passion greatly contributed to the richness of this experience. We recommend this activity without the slightest hesitation."
"It was an excellent experience. The sword master was extremely dedicated to both the physical and mental aspects of the samurai. Our guide did an outstanding job of translating all of our questions. Our guide went above and beyond to make this a memorable experience."
"Our experience was one of a kind and definitely well worth the time and money. It was inspiring and we are very grateful to have had this experience. We enjoyed learning the history and the culture and the location felt like paradise. We couldn't have asked for more."
"This is the real deal, not a touristy dress up for photos etc. I booked a 4 hour experience. It was a one to one lesson learning a number of foundation sword skills. As someone who has studied martial arts for over 40 years the instruction was excellent and specific to my needs. For those who want a genuine Samurai sword training experience I can 100% recommend this. The guide and translator was also brilliant, sharing history, culture and showing me around the temple."
"This was an amazing experience and insight into Japanese sword tradition. Our guide, Benoit, was great and the perfect interpreter. He also showed us around the temple a bit more after the experience ended which was a nice way to end the day. Watanabe san was amazing to watch and listen to, he had so much knowledge to share and he was really fun to talk to. The private experience is definitely worth the money because Watanabe san is able to get to know you specifically and the experience can be personalised. The temple grounds are also so peaceful and beautiful, they made the perfect setting for our training. It’s a really unique experience when you’re in Japan and if you’re interested at all in Samurai culture or history, I’d highly recommend it!"
"This was a standout activity in our Japan trip. For anyone who likes combat, history, samurai, &/or getting an authentic experience with Japanese culture - this is absolutely worth every dollar. it was a fantastic experience from beginning to end. The Translator, Yoshi, met us at the station and guided us to the shrine. on our way there he explained the history of the area, answered any questions and was just all-around a pleasure to be with. once arriving we rang the bell which set the tone. We met Watanabe, the master samurai who was a very warm presence. He only speaks Japanese but warm demeanor, physical expressions and Yoshi's interpretation made communication & training easy. after some history & ceremonies he showed a short and impressive training routine. we trained for the majority of the period and it was phenomenal! Very legit - learned stances and positioning, and practiced our strikes. it felt personalized, not just routine. one of a Kind experience you won't regret it!"

Osaka Samurai Experiences: FAQ
Short answers first, then the detail, for the questions visitors have about samurai, kendo, iaido and ninja experiences in Osaka. Prices are starting prices as of October 2026.
Four kinds: a culture session, sword technique training, cutting with a real blade, and kendo. Bushi no Homare's culture session combines kimono, calligraphy, tea, iaido basics and an armor photo from $202; DeepExperience offers private training with a sword master from $305; trial slashing with a sharp sword starts at $90; Vicky's kendo class at $125. Compare the main three
It depends on what you want to do with the sword, not on the city. Kyoto and Tokyo have their own samurai experiences, but Osaka offers every kind in one place: culture sessions, private training with a sword master, kendo, iaido and real-blade test cutting. In Osaka, the culture session has the broadest programme and Vicky's kendo the most reviews, 194. Osaka's sword experiences compared
From about $90 for a one-hour real-blade cut to about $305 for private training with a sword master, as of October 2026. Kendo costs $114 to $125 for two hours, the culture session $202 for three hours, and the ninja experiences $35 to $45. A private day in armor at Sasayama Castle is $421 for a group of up to 4. Every experience and its price
Yes: Bushi no Homare's trial slashing and its Become the Shogun session both end with you cutting a target with a real, sharp sword, under an instructor, and icp Travel's iaido session includes tameshigiri (cutting practice) as one of its steps. Trial slashing is from $90 for ages 10 and up. In DeepExperience's sessions you train with a sword and watch the master demonstrate a form with a real blade. Which sessions let you cut
Yes, at four experiences, most of them run by Bushi no Homare. Become the Shogun puts you in armor indoors with a real-sword cut from $104, the castle tour in armor meets at the same studio and walks Osaka Castle in costume from $167, and the culture session ends with an armor photo. Armor experiences compared
Iaido is the solo art of drawing the sword and cutting, practised in forms without an opponent; kendo is a sport in which two people in armor strike each other with bamboo swords. Iaido has no matches; kendo has matches and tournaments. In Osaka you can try iaido with Yushindou from $139 and kendo with Vicky from $125. Iaido and kendo side by side
Yes, if you pick by age: kendo with Vicky takes part from 5, the ninja cafe from 3, and most real-sword sessions from 10. The culture session starts at 12. Vicky's younger and older guests can watch instead of taking part. Every age limit
For history, Iga in Mie Prefecture, home of the Iga-ryu Ninja Museum, about 1.5 to 2 hours from Osaka by train; for an hour of play in Osaka, the Ninja Experience Cafe near Dotonbori. The cafe is rated 4.9 from 51 reviews, from $45, and takes children from 3. Osaka's ninja experiences
They were different roles rather than rivals in time: samurai were the warrior class, ninja were agents trained for stealth and intelligence. The experiences in Osaka split the same way: samurai sessions are about the sword and etiquette, ninja ones about costumes, throwing stars and fun. Ninja or samurai?
A real Japanese sword is a registered art object, and exporting one needs a permit from Japan's Agency for Cultural Affairs, which takes weeks. That makes it a purchase to arrange through a dealer, not something to buy on the day of an experience. The swords used in the sessions stay at the dojo. Before you book a sword session
Something easy to change out of: every sword, kendo and armor session dresses you in dogi and hakama, kendo armor or kimono. Bushi no Homare asks you to bring a T-shirt and arrive 30 minutes early. Avoid skirts at the ninja cafe. What wearing armor involves
Yes, every one on this site runs in English. Bushi no Homare can arrange Italian, Spanish, French, Chinese, Thai or Indonesian interpreters if you ask before booking, and DeepExperience offers French. Languages in the comparison
Cutting a straw mat with a real samurai sword, sparring in kendo armor, and training privately with a sword master in a temple are three you will not find in most guides. For a gentler half day, the culture session adds calligraphy and a tea ceremony to the sword. All Osaka samurai experiences
