What Is Iaido, How It Differs from Kendo, and Where to Try Each in Osaka

What is iaido vs kendo: solo sword drawing vs bamboo-sword sparring. Try iaido in Osaka from $139 or kendo from $125, as of October 2026.

Updated October 2026

Iaido is the solo art of drawing the Japanese sword and cutting in one movement, practised alone in set forms with a real or a training sword and never against an opponent; kendo is a sport in which two people in armor strike each other with bamboo swords. In Osaka you can try a taste of iaido for an hour with Yushindou, from $139 as of October 2026, or kendo for two hours with Vicky, from $125.

The two share roots, and in Japan the same federation, the All Japan Kendo Federation, sets standard forms for both; many senior kendo practitioners hold iaido grades too. Swordsmanship in general goes by several names in Japanese: kenjutsu for the older fighting schools, iaido or iaijutsu for the art of the draw, and kendo for the modern sport.

Yushindou teaches Yushin-ryu, a style its grandmaster built on the Edo-period Yagyu Shinkage-ryu school. The hour covers hakama, the draw and basic swordsmanship with a safe practice sword, and practitioners demonstrate the real technique. Yushindou says it suits adults and children alike.

icp Travel’s session is held in the Arai residence, a building on Japan’s register of tangible cultural properties, near Izumisano Station in southern Osaka, with a free taxi from the station. You change into kimono, sit in zazen, learn sword etiquette and practise Toyama-ryu iaido with a teacher described as a multiple-time Japanese champion. It is three hours, for up to eight people, and has no reviews yet. Bottled water is not included and there is nowhere nearby to buy drinks, so bring your own.

Bushi no Homare’s culture session gives iaido about 40 minutes inside a three-hour programme of calligraphy, tea ceremony and armor. It is the gentlest way in.

If you would rather spar, kendo in Osaka covers both classes; to cut a target with a sharp sword, see samurai sword experiences.
