The kendo experience to book in Osaka is Vicky’s two-hour Samurai Training Experience, rated 5.0 from 194 reviews, from $125 as of October 2026: you put on full kendo armor, learn the strikes and fight short matches against the instructor. It has more reviews than any other experience on this site, and it is one of the few that takes children from five.

What kendo is, in one minute
Kendo is the modern sport that grew out of Japanese swordsmanship. Two people face each other with bamboo swords, called shinai, and protective armor, and they score by striking set targets. It has matches and competitions, which is the main difference from iaido, the solo art of drawing the sword (iaido vs kendo explains both). A kendo class is therefore active: you move, shout and strike, rather than pose.

Which class to book
Pick by who is coming:
Vicky's Kendo Class
Full armor, matches, samurai photos; from age 5.
Check dates →Park for us Kendo Workshop
The whole course from etiquette to a mini match.
See this workshop →Trial Slashing
No sparring: stances, then a cut with a sharp sword.
See this session →Vicky’s class is built for beginners. It opens with a short lecture on kendo, then you put on the uniform and the protective armor and practise with an English-speaking instructor before the matches. You also get samurai photos with swords and props. For the best fit, the class asks for your height, weight and gender when you book. Guests under five or over 76 cannot try the kendo itself and watch instead.
Park for us is the smaller workshop: up to two participants, which makes it close to a private lesson. It covers the whole course, from the bow and the etiquette to how to strike, and ends with a match-style mini game. It includes the armor and equipment, water and a Japanese hand towel. It is not suitable for children under nine or for people with mobility problems.
If you want a real sword rather than a bamboo one, kendo is the wrong class: see samurai sword experiences, where Bushi no Homare’s trial slashing ends with a cut through a straw mat.
Before you book
- It is a workout. Two hours in armor is hot and tiring; drink water and tell the instructor about any injuries.
- Pregnancy. Both classes say they are not suitable for pregnant women.
- Where. Vicky’s dojo is in Osaka city; the exact address comes with the booking. Getting there is up to you.
- Photos. Vicky’s includes posed samurai photos; bring your own phone or camera for the rest.
