Updated October 2026

To experience Osaka Castle as a samurai, book Bushi no Homare’s private castle tour in armor: two to two and a half hours with a guide, in a full suit of armor or a kimono, walking Osaka Castle in costume, from $167 as of October 2026. You meet at Bushi no Homare’s studio, 2-3-19 Shiginonishi, Joto ward, 30 minutes before your time to change. It is the only option on this site that puts you in armor at the castle itself. For a cut with a real sword as well, the same company’s studio east of the castle sells that separately.

The samurai story behind the castle

Toyotomi Hideyoshi built the first great keep in the 1580s. It stood for about 30 years: in 1615, during the Summer Siege of Osaka, Tokugawa Ieyasu’s forces burned it and the Toyotomi clan fell. The Tokugawa shogunate rebuilt the castle, but its keep was struck by lightning in 1665 and burned, and the castle went without a main tower for more than two and a half centuries. The keep you see today was rebuilt in 1931 with money raised from the public, in steel and concrete on the old stone base.

That 1615 siege is the scene most samurai experiences in Osaka borrow: the culture session’s armor photo casts you as a soldier on the Toyotomi side.
