What wearing armor involves

A suit of samurai armor comes in many pieces, from the helmet down to the thigh guards, and it is warm to wear, which is one reason most sessions keep you indoors or close to the studio. Every option below supplies the armor; the castle tour also offers women a kimono set instead.

Become the Shogun is the best value if you want to wear armor and do more than pose. You start in dogi and hakama, learn how the sword is held, put on the armor indoors and make a cut with a real sword. An optional exercise has you fighting with real swords in armor. It is not for children under 10 or adults over 80.

The Osaka Castle tour in armor is the one for photos with the real keep behind you. You meet at Bushi no Homare’s studio in Joto ward 30 minutes early to change, then walk Osaka Castle in costume. It is private, two to two and a half hours with a guide who tells the castle’s stories from the warring-states era, and women can choose a kimono set instead of armor. It is not for under-10s or over-70s, and it has only five reviews.

The culture session fits armor into a longer day of calligraphy, tea and sword basics; the armor part is the photo, posed as a soldier in the 1615 Summer Siege of Osaka.

The Sasayama day is a full private day for groups who want armor inside an actual castle, Sasayama in Hyogo, with samurai residences around it. Pickup is at Kyoto, Osaka or Sannomiya station. It has no reviews yet and costs $421 for a group of up to four.
