Samurai Sword Experiences in Osaka: Which One Puts a Real Blade in Your Hands?
Osaka samurai sword experiences compared: private training with a sword master from $305, test cutting with a real blade from $90, as of October 2026.
For the deepest samurai sword experience in Osaka, book DeepExperience’s private training with a sword master in a temple in Minoh, rated 4.9 from 57 reviews, from $305 as of October 2026; to cut something with a real, sharp sword, Bushi no Homare’s trial slashing does it in about an hour from $90. The two answer different wishes. One teaches you how a swordsman moves; the other lets you feel a blade go through a target.

Three things a “sword experience” can mean
Learning to move with a sword. Stance, grip, footwork, breathing and the bow to the sword, taught one-to-one or in a small group with a training sword. DeepExperience’s sessions are this kind, and so is Yushindou’s dojo hour, which teaches drawing the sword with a safe practice blade.
Cutting with a real blade. Tameshigiri means “test cut”. In the Edo period it tested a sword’s quality; today the point is the cutter’s own technique. The usual target is a rolled tatami omote mat, the woven top layer of a tatami, sometimes soaked to make it denser. Bushi no Homare’s trial slashing and its “Become the Shogun” hour both end with you making that cut, under an instructor, and icp Travel’s iaido session includes tameshigiri as its sixth step.
Watching a real blade. Every DeepExperience session includes a form demonstrated by the master with a real blade, which you watch from a safe distance and can ask about through the interpreter.

Which one to book
Pick by what you want to leave with:
Sword Master in Minoh
Your own teacher, an interpreter, a temple setting.
Check dates →Trial Slashing
Stances, then a cut with a sharp sword. Ages 10 and up.
See this session →Sword Master at Kozu Shrine
Four private hours in a shrine room in central Osaka.
See this session →The Minoh session is the one to choose if the sword is the point of your trip. The teacher adjusts the training to your experience, no martial-arts background is needed, and the session takes place in a quiet temple in Minoh, a city on the northern edge of Osaka Prefecture. It is long, three and a half to five hours, so it fills most of a day.
The Kozu Shrine session is the same teacher-led format in a room the shrine sets aside, closer to the sightseeing centre, and it includes a goshuin, the shrine’s seal written into a book. It has three reviews so far.
Trial slashing suits anyone who mainly wants the moment of the cut. You change into dogi and hakama, learn the basic stances, then cut; a photographer catches the moment. Up to six people, not for children under 10. “Become the Shogun” is the same studio’s version in armor, with an optional sword-fighting exercise, for up to eight.
Yushindou’s hour is the shortest. It comes from Yushin-ryu, a style its founder built on the Edo-period Yagyu Shinkage-ryu school, and it is suitable for children as well as adults.
For the solo art of drawing the sword, and how it differs from kendo, see iaido vs kendo. The samurai culture session adds iaido basics to calligraphy, tea and armor.

Before you book
- Getting there. None of these includes hotel transport. DeepExperience gives the meeting point after booking.
- Clothes. You change into training clothes at every session; Bushi no Homare asks for a T-shirt under them and arrival 30 minutes early.
- The sword stays behind. You do not take a sword home. Buying a real Japanese sword to export needs a permit from Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs, which takes weeks, so it is arranged through a dealer.
- Languages. All run in English; DeepExperience also offers French.
